Freddie Santana, a 27 year old Fitchburg resident was killed Wednesday morning  at his apartment on Columbus Street.  This is the second murder in Fitchburg in the past two weeks.

On July 31st, 29 year old Lauren Bowen was found dead in an apartment on Grove Street.  The suspect, Ha Yang, later killed himself in a standoff with police.

The Worcester District Attorney’s office and the Fitchburg Police Department are currently investigating the crime but do not believe it to be a random act.

Anyone who might have any information can contact the Fitchburg Police Department at 978-345-9648 or online anonymously using the Fitchburg Police Tip Line.

Fitchburg Court too Lenient

This is a topic that has been brought up in many of our meetings, and one that has been addressed to me by both local officials and members of the Worcester DA’s office; the Fitchburg Court System is too lenient.

This was made more evident this past weekend with the unfortunate death of a 25 year old woman by a man who had been convicted of stalking and harassment back in October of 2007.  The same man had been convicted of the same crimes early in that year in July in Leominster.  From court records it appears the man spent a total 0f 109 days in jail, plus six months in the Worcester State Hospital.

Which draws the following question:
How can someone be convicted of the same crimes twice in one year and receive such a minimal sentence?

Those of us whom live in Fitchburg and whom own businesses can tell you the same thing; we see the same criminals walking the streets nearly every day with no fear of the Fitchburg Court System what so ever.

And why should they be scared? I’ve seen known drug dealers arrested on a Saturday night and free to roam the streets of Fitchburg by Monday morning.  And do they lay low? NO!  They go right back to dealing because they know at best they’ll get 3 months at Worcester House and be back on Main Street before anyone even realizes they are gone.

The Fitchburg Court System needs to start making examples of drug dealers, gang members and prostitutes; especially the repeat offenders.

How lenient is your court system when drug dealers and junkies stop traffic on Main Street to make a deal, or when people walk openly down the street inspecting their crack rock while shaking a little blue baggy for all to see.

You wonder why Fitchburg is stuck in this abyss; look towards your court system.  Watch the same criminals walk in and out of those doors and you will see why.

The Fitchburg Court System needs to work with the Worcester DA’s office and the Fitchburg Police Department to keep our streets safe and free from these criminals.  Leniency should not be taken into consideration for repeat offenders.  Until you make a statement, Fitchburg will continue to be held hostage by criminals who don’t fear you because you don’t hold them accountable for their actions.

Fitchburg is receiving $801,620 in federal funds, enough to hire or rehire four police officers.

According to the Sentinel and Enterprise,  “The funds will be administered by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services of the Department of Justice, under the agency’s COPS Hiring Recovery Program, and will be used to provide 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for entry-level officer positions over a three-year period, or for rehired officers who have been laid off or officers scheduled to be laid off at a future date because of local budget cuts.”

This is a much need, as the Fitchburg Police Department is currently down to 68 officers in a city that requires at least 100.
